"In the waters of Sailors Creek, nestled along the North Bank of the Penryn Estuary, I explored the unlikely relationship between pollinators and GRP boat dumping - to understand overlooked consequences of boat dumping, marine pollution and the effect on delicate ecosystems of hedgerow habitats - a vital haven for countless pollinators.
GRP boats, with their undeniable charm and versatility, have long been a staple of maritime recreation. Yet, the enchanting waters that once hosted these vessels hold a secret burden—pollution. GRP boats contribute to water contamination.
Oil and fuel leaks, the discharge of sewage and wastewater, and the release of microplastics from boat materials compose the multifaceted palette of pollutants that can seep into pristine waters. As the study revealed, these pollutants pose a significant threat to the surrounding marine environment. Riparian zones, the fringes of water bodies that cradle vibrant hedgerow habitats, emerged as a key focus of this investigation. These zones, often overlooked in ecological studies, provide essential refuge and sustenance to countless pollinators. Their sensitivity to changes in water quality became evident. "
